10 Best Cars For The Money: “These Are the Longest-Lasting Car Brands,” presents a study identifying car brands and models most likely to reach at least 250,000 miles.
Key findings of the study include:
Toyota is ranked as the longest-lasting car brand overall, with 17 percent of its vehicles likely to reach 250,000 miles, which is 1.8 times the average. Models like the Toyota Tundra, Land Cruiser, and Tacoma contribute to this ranking. Toyota also has sedans (Avalon, Camry) and hybrids (Prius, Highlander Hybrid) in the top 30 longest-lasting vehicles.
Honda is the second longest-lasting brand, with 13.6 percent of its vehicles likely to reach 250,000 miles (1.4 times the average). Top Honda models include the Ridgeline and Pilot, but the Accord, CR-V, and Odyssey also rank in the top 30.
Following Toyota and Honda, the next three longest-lasting automakers are American brands with a strong focus on trucks and SUVs: Ram (11.5%), GMC (11.4%), and Chevrolet (10.5%). Ford (9.5%) also ranks above the overall average.
The overall average chance of a vehicle reaching 250,000 miles is 8.6 percent. For non-luxury brands, the average is 9.5 percent.
When looking at non-luxury brands, the top six above the average are Toyota, Honda, Ram, GMC, Chevrolet, and Ford.
The study also breaks down rankings for luxury brands, where the average chance of reaching 250,000 miles is lower at just 3.6 percent. This is attributed to less aggressive use and a higher percentage of coupes and sports cars among luxury vehicles.
Lexus is the longest-lasting luxury brand, with a 9.7 percent chance of reaching 250,000 miles, significantly higher than the luxury average (2.7 times). Acura, Cadillac, and Lincoln follow.
The top-ranked individual vehicles most likely to last 250,000+ miles are the Toyota Tundra (36.6%) and Toyota Sequoia (36.4%), which are over four times more likely than the average vehicle to reach that mileage. The top ranks are dominated by large pickup trucks and SUVs.
The article suggests that for high-ranked vehicles, 100,000 miles might not even be halfway through their usable lifespan.
The study provides insights for both used and new car shoppers, highlighting which brands and models are statistically more likely to have a long lifespan. It also presents lists of the top 15 longest-lasting car brands overall, the top 15 non-luxury brands, and the top 10 luxury brands, as well as the top 30 individual vehicle models.
