Benefits and Risks of Separating Finances During Marriage: Getting married? Should You Separate Your Finances? How Married Couples Maintain Financial Independence. Some married couples are choosing to keep their assets and finances separate rather than merging everything. This allows each spouse to maintain their financial independence, privacy, and control, according to Nicole Gopoian Wirick, JD, CFP®, the president of President · Prosperity Wealth Strategies. If you are thinking about merging your marital finances, check out this short video.
Reasons for Separate Assets – Marrying later in life when each spouse has already accumulated assets and established financial habits. Makes it harder psychologically and logistically to combine. – Protect premarital assets and inheritance in case of divorce. Keeping them separate makes division easier. – Accommodate different incomes, spending habits, attitudes to money, and financial styles. Gives more autonomy and less conflict. – Easier to manage individual debts and liabilities separately. – Provide some protection in case the marriage ends badly. Making It Work – Have clear, upfront conversations about finances and ongoing check-ins. Agree on division of expenses. – Consider a prenuptial or postnuptial agreement to define separate vs marital property. – Be careful not to “commingle” assets. Keep inherited assets, premarital assets, gifts in separate accounts. – Understand difference between “separate property” and “marital property” – income earned during marriage is generally marital. – Use separate accounts for personal spending, joint account for shared expenses. – Consult an attorney to understand state laws regarding division of assets in divorce. Laws differ substantially. The keys are transparency, communication, and intentionally maintaining boundaries around separate assets. With some planning, teamwork, and mutual understanding, couples can make the option of separate finances work.
